The Season of New Beginnings

Spring is a season of rejuvenation, growth, and fresh beginnings. After a long, cold winter, the arrival of spring brings a sense of hope and optimism as nature springs back to life. It’s the perfect time to plan and host events, as the weather is mild, the flowers are blooming, and everyone is ready to shake off the winter blues and engage in outdoor activities.

To Nicol W. Segel, the owner & founder of Nicol Floral Design, spring is her “favorite time of year for events.” Nicol loves kicking off the season with her annual gardening ritual, at which time she exchanges her winter florals with fresh spring blooms. She loves seeing her hydrangeas reappear in a delightful array of pale blue and lilac, and she simply loves lounging outside on her patio in the early evenings with friends, family, and a chilled glass of white wine, while soaking in the serene ambience of spring.

“The native flowers of Pennsylvania are very different from where I grew up,” says Nicol, who journeyed to the United States from beautiful Eastern Spain in her twenties and has lived on the Main Line ever since. She enjoys the sweet aroma of spring blossoms and fresh grass, and she especially appreciates the verdant colors of the lush, Pennsylvania suburbs where she currently resides.

Nicol also cherishes the significance of spring, as to her, it holds an even deeper meaning—the season in which, twenty-six years ago, she welcomed her first child. However, springtime is as much about creating new memories as it is about treasuring the beautiful moments of our past.

How to Host a Sensational Spring Wedding

This scenic season is seen as a time of transformation and positive change, hence why it is such a popular choice for weddings. Nicol, who is well-versed in the art of springtime event planning, discusses the many benefits of getting married during this sensational time of year.

1. Pleasant weather: Spring weather is typically mild and comfortable, with warm days and cool evenings, making it an ideal time for an outdoor wedding. “I think spring is the best time of year to get married,” Nicol says. “The temperature is ideal for outdoor ceremonies as it’s not too cold and it’s not too hot.” For those concerned about spring showers, Nicol believes that “there is nothing more magical than a reception that takes place under a big event tent,” one that allows guests to observe the outdoors, while remaining protected from any unforeseen rainfall.

2. Beautiful scenery: Spring is known for its colorful blooms and vivid greenery, which can create a stunning and unforgettable backdrop for outdoor events. Cherry blossoms, forsythia, and peonies are just a few examples of the many exquisite flowers that are in season during the spring. This natural beauty can enhance the joyful and romantic vibe of any event and create a truly memorable experience.

3. Venue availability: As the weather warms up, many outdoor venues become available for weddings. This includes parks, gardens, and other outdoor spaces that are great for hosting events. These venues often have ample space, allowing event planners to create a unique layout and design for a wedding. “Pennsylvania has so many beautiful and historic venues with gorgeous, well-landscaped grounds, perfect for a wedding reception,” says Nicol. Some of her favorite springtime venues are the Appleford Estate in Villanova, the Loch Aerie Mansion in Malvern, the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park, and the historic Fairmount Water Works in Philadelphia.

4. Seasonal themes: Spring is a season of holidays and celebrations, including Easter, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. These holidays provide opportunities for event planners to create seasonal-themed events that are tailored to the occasion. Spring-themed decor, food, and activities can add a unique and festive touch to any wedding reception. And, most importantly, spring is traditionally a time of celebrating new beginnings, so what better time to celebrate the start of such an exciting, new chapter?

5. Increased attendance: After a long winter, people are eager to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. The pleasant weather and beautiful scenery at this time of year create a fun and positive atmosphere that encourages attendance and participation.

Of course, the best season for a wedding ultimately depends on the couple’s personal preferences. Every season has something extraordinary to offer, and Nicol Floral Design has flower walls for all of them.

Finding Florals that Fit Your Aesthetic

When it comes to choosing a color palette for spring weddings, the most popular choices tend to be soft, pastel hues or bright and lively shades inspired by nature. However, color preferences can vary greatly depending on individual tastes and cultural contexts.

Spring is known for its abundance of flowers, so incorporating floral hues like blush, rose, and lilac can be a great way to bring the natural beauty of the season into your event decor. Nicol, who most enjoys a classic and harmonious blend of pastel shades, recommends using “a lot of hydrangeas and light-hued roses” at events that take place in March through June. “Soft, muted colors like cream, pale pink, and lavender,” the expert floral designer says of her preferred color palette, “are extremely popular for spring events.”

Bold and vibrant shades like fuchsia, coral, apricot, and sunny yellow can also be a popular choice. These lively colors are light, bright, and fresh, and can add a fun and energetic vibe to a spring wedding.

For a more natural and organic feel, earthy tones like sage green and terracotta orange can be used to create a peaceful, wholesome atmosphere. This color palette is often used for outdoor weddings and rustic-themed events.

Nicol Floral Design’s most popular flower walls at spring weddings are “Chloe,” “June,” and “Cheyenne.” These pastel-colored floral panels pair best with a classic spring color palette of soft pastels and white. Spring-inspired walls “June” and “Cheyenne” contain subtle pops of pale pink and soft spring colors among the cascade of creams and whites, while “Chloe” is an elegant, monochromatic wall composed of delicate white roses. “Hannah” is also a gorgeous choice for couples with a bright and bold color palette, as it showcases splashes of more vibrant florals, such as fiery rose and fuchsia.

Out of all Nicol Floral Design’s flower walls, the designer names “June” her favorite for a spring wedding. “June” is a predominantly-white flower wall that is as timeless and everlasting as the love stories it was made for. “What’s great about June is how well it coordinates with any color palette,” Nicol tells us.

Our Springtime Spotlight

Nicol fondly recalls the awe-inspiring marriage of Lyndsay & Vincent, which took place at the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia and was later featured in the Philadelphia Wedding Magazine. The ceremony was held outside in the picturesque gardens, beside a tranquil pond, and the reception that followed was indoors at a nearby location. The couple chose “Cheyenne” as their floral backdrop, which paired wonderfully with the abundance of fresh white orchids and roses that adorned the sophisticated outdoor venue.

“They enlisted event planner Gina Sole to coordinate all the details and sleuth out a location that would be a unique destination for out-of-town guests. After a friend suggested the Rodin Museum, the bride was immediately enamored of its dramatic architecture and French landscaping.”

“The couple chose a single table that seated 137 guests. It was outfitted with custom mirrored tabletops, a floral hedge and candelabras, with vases of orchids interspersed throughout.”

“They eschewed traditional wedding cake, opting for a croquembouche served alongside key-lime tarts, lavender shortbread, dulce sea salt tarts, and strawberry pavlovas. In keeping with the color scheme, Lyndsay zeroed in on lavender gowns in two styles for her four bridesmaids.”

“Design firm Evantine festooned the Rodin entryway where the ceremony took place with garlands of white flowers. Before the ceremony began, guests were invited to mingle in the Rodin’s manicured gardens, sipping cocktails and taking photos.”
